Constructive Communication Workshop for Teams Vancouver Island

"We Need To Talk..."

Some conversations are easy. Others make us want to hide under the desk, send an email instead, or hope the problem sorts itself out while we quietly ignore it. We Need To Talk is about those conversations: the ones that matter greatly, but can feel really hard to have.

Giving feedback, receiving feedback, addressing problems, and disagreeing about how things should be done are times when we might feel awkward, uncomfortable, and way outside our comfort zone. But avoidance is not the answer.

This practical, interactive workshop explores how trust, vulnerability, conflict and our nervous systems all influence the way we communicate. Participants will discover their own conflict tendencies, understand why difficult conversations can trigger strong reactions, and learn practical tools for saying - and hearing - what needs to be said, clearly, respectfully and courageously.

Two workshop options are available, and can be delivered together for maximum results

WE NEED TO TALK

Good Teams Talk. Great Teams Talk About The Hard Stuff

You know that conversation you’ve been putting off? The one that’s somehow getting harder the longer you avoid it?

Maybe a misunderstanding has turned into frustration. Perhaps someone's behaviour is an issue. Maybe you need to give feedback, disagree with a colleague, or raise an issue without damaging the relationship. These conversations can be uncomfortable. And when we don't know how to approach them or we fear them getting combative, it's tempting to avoid them, put them off, or hope the problem will sort itself out.

Maybe you turn to a new system or procedure or way of working that you hope will fix an issue. But anything you introduce is only as good as the human skills of the people who implement it. If you still can't give or receive feedback, have hard conversations or approach issues with confidence, the system will not solve anything.

We Need To Talk is a practical workshop that helps people understand what makes these conversations difficult and develop the skills to handle them more constructively.

What we'll explore:

  • Trust and Communication

What helps people feel able to speak honestly, listen openly, and work through differences?

  • Self-awareness

How do our own habits, assumptions and reactions affect the way we communicate?

  • Different Perspectives

How can we understand where someone else is coming from, even when we don't agree?

  • Difficult Conversations

What happens when we feel defensive, threatened or misunderstood, and what can we do about it?

  • Constructive Conflict

How can we address problems clearly and directly without turning them into bigger problems?

Why book this workshop?

  • Better Communication

Your team will learn how to communicate clearly, directly, and kindly with you and each other, leading to faster problem solving

  • Stronger relationships

Better understanding of self and others leads to better relationships at work, and a happier, healthier work environment for everyone.

  • Promote Creativity and Innovation

When people with different ideas and perspectives come together, it can lead to creative problem-solving and new ideas.

  • Improve Decision Making

When different viewpoints are considered, it leads to better decisions and more buy-in from everyone on the team.

  • Identify and Address Problems

Courageous conversations bring underlying issues to the surface, allowing them to be addressed and resolved, so work can continue smoothly.

What will people take away?

Participants will develop a better understanding of themselves and others, along with practical strategies and language to approach conversations that might otherwise feel uncomfortable or daunting. The aim is to help people approach difficult situations with greater awareness, confidence and curiosity, so they can work through differences and find a way forward.

Your facilitator, Liz Wootton, brings a sense of humour, and an understanding that people are, well, complicated. You’ll leave with an understanding that conflict may be inevitable, but combat is optional.

WE NEED TO TALK: LEADING THE WAY

Leadership is easy. Until you bring people into it.

You can be good at your job, know your business inside-out and have a clear idea of what needs to happen. Then you bring other people into the picture, and suddenly, getting things done involves different personalities, misunderstandings, difficult feedback, and some conversations you'd really rather not have at all.

It feels like it would be easier just to do it all yourself.

Being a leader isn't just about setting direction and getting results. It's also about creating conditions that allow people to work well together and communicate constructively, even at times of conflict.

Leading the Way is a practical workshop for team leaders who want to understand their influence on the way people communicate, build trust, and handle the challenges of working together. Leaders who work on their human skills are the ones who get the best results.

What we'll explore:

  • The Leader's Influence

How do your everyday behaviours and responses shape the way people interact with you and each other?

  • Building Trust

What helps people feel able to raise concerns, admit mistakes, offer ideas, and challenge assumptions?

  • Being Open to Feedback

How do you respond when someone says something you don't particularly want to hear?

  • Encouraging Honest Conversations

How can you make it easier for people to speak up, listen to each other, and address problems directly?

  • Leading By Example

What does it look like to appraoch disagreement, mistakes and uncomfortable conversations constructively?

Why book this workshop?

  • Better Communication

You will learn how to communicate clearly, directly, and kindly with your team, and support them in doing the same.

  • Stronger relationships

When you can communicate confidently, even over difficult issues, listen to understand, and help your team members do it too, people work better together, and are happier and healthier at work.

  • Promote Creativity and Innovation

Encouraging people to speak up, and then listening to their different perspectives, can lead to creative problem-solving and new ideas.

  • Improve Decision Making

When different viewpoints are considered and listened to by a leader, you can make better decisions and get more buy-in from everyone on the team.

  • Identify and Address Problems

Courageous conversations bring underlying issues to the surface, allowing them to be addressed and resolved, so work can continue smoothly. When you lead by example with constructive communication, you make it possible for others to do the same.

What will you take away?

You will have an opportunity to reflect on the environment you're creating, recognize the impact of your own behaviour, and identify practical ways to encourage more open, constructive communication. You will leave with knowledge, skills, and practices you can implement in your own team.

Creating a team where people can speak honestly, listen to each other, and work through challenges, doesn't happen by accident. It happens when leaders intentionally create an environment where it is safe and desirable to do so, and where they support their teams in putting these skills into practice.

Liz Wootton Business Coaching Vancouver Island

A practical, human approach

I'm Liz Wootton, a leadership coach and facilitator with over 2 decades of leadership and management experience as a Business Owner and Director of Organizational Development. I founded Human Nature Development in 2013 to support leaders and business owners in managing their greatest asset: their people. My work is grounded in a simple belief: that people work far more effectively when they feel able to be honest, understand themselves and each other, and address the issues that need addressing without fear of judgement or repercussion. I bring practical experience, curiosity, and a willingness to explore the difficult stuff without judgement. I want people to feel heard, think about things in a new way, and leave with skills they can actually use. And yes, there is always room for a sense of humour along the way. We are human, after all.
